As of recent updates, these are the only states that do not require the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) for initial certification:

  1. Alabama

  2. Alaska

  3. Colorado

  4. Georgia

  5. Indiana

  6. Iowa

  7. Michigan

  8. Nevada

  9. North Carolina

  10. South Carolina

These states may have their own certification process, including state exams or training programs. However, the NREMT is still commonly required for reciprocity (when transferring licensure from another state) or for renewal in many cases. Updated 3/11/2025

As of the latest updates, the following states do not require the NREMT for reciprocity:

  1. Alabama

  2. Alaska

  3. Colorado

  4. Georgia

  5. Indiana
